IVORY COAST MAINTAIN GROUP D LEAD

Ivory Coast have maintained their one-point lead over Cameroon at the top of the Group D standings as far as the African qualifying campaign for next year’s FIFA World Cup tournament in Qatar is concerned.


Apart from Cameroon and Ivory Coast, Malawi and Mozambique are the other teams in the group. At the end of the fourth round of games in the group, Mozambique and Malawi are out of the running as only the group winners can qualify for the next stage of the African qualifying campaign.

In the first round of games in the group, Mozambique played out a goalless draw with Ivory Coast, while Cameroon beat Malawi 2-0 at home thanks to the goals from Vincent Aboubakarand Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui in the first half.

In the second round of matches, Ivory Coast beat Cameroon 2-1 at home thanks to the double from in-form Ajax Amsterdam striker Sebastien Haller, while MoumiNgamaleu scored the lone goal for the Indomitable Lions in the second half. The opening goal of the game was from the penalty spot courtesy Haller, while the Cameroon goal was also a spot kick.

Ivory Coast took top spot at the end of round two games in the group and they have not relinquished it till date. After four games, Ivory Coast have ten points as the team to beat in the group, while Cameroon are in second place with nine points. Malawi are in third position on the group standings with three points, while Mozambique are last on the table with one point.

In the third round of games in the group, Malawi were beaten 3-0 at home by Ivory Coast with JeremieBoga getting the final goal of the game, while Cameroon beat Mozambique 3-1 at home. For the fourth and final round of games till date, Ivory Coast beat Malawi 2-1 at home, while Mozambique lost 1-0 to Cameroon.
