Hugo Broos pushed the Cameroon national football team to the finals of the 2017 AFCON where they had to face off with Egypt on February 5 of 2017 and Cameroon came out on top with a 2-1 triumph.
This was the 5th AFCON title that Cameroon has won in their history, the only other African national side that has won more AFCON pieces of silverware is Egypt as they have lifted it on 7 occasions.
The 64 year old Belgian manager of Cameroon is extremely happy about his recent success with the African national side but Hugo Broos is aiming for even bigger things as the experienced manager said:
“it’s true that when I came to Cameroon a year ago I found a group of players who were not motivated so I had to change that. They were coming not to play for the national team but because they had to, because the coach asked them to come. So I changed the group a little bit and put some young payers in and we started working and doing a good job’’
“We have a team that is still not on the highest level. We can be better, but I think it is only the beginning.I am happy for the group, for the players. This is not a group of football players; this is a group of friends. That’s why the players who are on the bench keep being motivated. Against Senegal, against Ghana and against Egypt, these players made the difference’’
One of the next tasks of Hugo Broos is to help Cameroon in their process of qualifying for the approaching 2018 FIFA World Cup and they are currently positioned in the 2nd spot of Group B with 2 points gathered from their 2 initial opening qualification matches. Their forthcoming match is scheduled to be played on August 28 as they face off with Nigeria.
